“We hired an attorney as well as the private investigator. Thomas has been taking extra jobs for collectors, making replicas, to pay for all this. We asked the investigator to first find any remaining relatives of Mr. DeBrea, so I could make whatever amends I could.
“Turns out Mr. DeBrea had one child, a daughter, who is in her junior year of high school now. She’s a good student, but her Mom is not well off. We were so happy, because at last there was something concrete I could do to right the wrongs of the past. We decided to find a way to help her go to college. Anonymously, of course, we’d set up a scholarship. She’d probably never accept it otherwise.
“The attorney said that we could set it up to look like a scholarship program she won. She has good grades. It doesn’t make up for her being raised without a father, but it’s something I can do. She more than deserves it.”
Logan couldn’t help but think of how much Lisa must miss her own little girl, who never got to grow up, let alone go to college. Helping this girl would help Lisa honor her own daughter’s memory. She wondered if Lisa saw the connection.
“All that was left was for the private investigator to find evidence that proved I had nothing to do with the firebombing or that man’s death. We’ve been waiting to hear from him. He could clear Thomas easily, but Thomas won’t let me call him.”
Lisa took a deep breath.
“So that’s why Thomas isn’t talking to the police,” she said, “he has an alibi that explains why he let Elizabeth blackmail him even though he wasn’t guilty of anything. He only wants to protect me, so he won’t tell the police the truth. He wasn’t worried about her coming back for more money, because everything will be out in the open as soon as the investigator gets back to us. That or I’ll be arrested. Either way, Thomas had no motive to hurt Elizabeth. And of course, he would never harm anyone.”
“Of course,” Logan said.
Logan didn’t think that Lisa confessing would help Thomas. They would just think he murdered Elizabeth to stop additional blackmail. And in the back of her mind was the nagging question. Who was the father of Elizabeth’s baby?
“Thomas is protecting me, but I can’t keep letting him do that. Whether or not we hear my name is cleared with the FBI yet, I’m going to the police.”
“Sounds like the best way to help you and get Thomas off the suspect list is to find out who really killed Elizabeth Woods. That way no one will dig around in your past, and you can do whatever you need to feel at peace,” said Logan.
That was the best outcome any of them could hope for, but way above her pay grade.
Lisa’s violet eyes flashed with new strength, “I already called and asked to see Detective Andrews as soon as possible. They said he’d probably be in after 9:00 a.
